Signs worth taking seriously

Problem gambling is rarely a single dramatic moment. It usually looks like a slow drift, and the signals below are common — none of them is a diagnosis, but several of them together is a reason to talk to someone:

Tools that actually work

Not all controls are equally effective. The ones that work best are the ones that are hard to undo in the moment, and that apply everywhere at once rather than site by site.

Bank and card-level blocks — the strongest option

Gambling transactions carry their own merchant category code, which means a block applied at your bank or card provider stops payments to every gambling merchant simultaneously. Several Irish banks offer this in their app, and Revolut has its own gambling block in the security settings.

This is more effective than self-excluding from individual casinos, for two reasons: it is comprehensive, and it usually carries a cooling-off delay before it can be switched off. That delay is the entire point — it puts a gap between the impulse and the deposit.

Deposit and loss limits

Every reputable casino lets you set a deposit limit in your account settings. Set it when you open the account, not when you feel you need it — decisions made calmly are better than decisions made mid-session. Check that reductions apply immediately and increases carry a delay; if a casino applies an increase instantly, that tells you something about the operator.

Time-outs and self-exclusion

A time-out locks your account for a short defined period. Self-exclusion is longer and cannot be reversed on request. Both are standard at any casino worth using, and refusing a self-exclusion request is one of the things that would remove an operator from this site entirely.

The limitation is that both are per-casino. Excluding yourself from one operator does nothing about the rest, which is why bank-level blocks are the stronger tool.

The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 provides for a National Gambling Exclusion Register, to be operated by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland — a single register covering licensed operators rather than one-at-a-time exclusion. It is part of a regime still being rolled out. Until it is operational, and noting that the international casinos reviewed on this site would not be covered by it in any case, a bank-level block remains the most comprehensive option available to you.

Blocking software

Applications such as Gamban and BetBlocker restrict access to gambling sites across your devices. BetBlocker is free. These work best combined with a payment block rather than instead of one — software handles access, the bank block handles money.

A few things that are simply true about casino games

We would rather say this plainly than let the rest of the site imply otherwise:

• The house edge is permanent. Every casino game is built to return less than it takes over time. That is not a flaw or a rigged outcome — it is the design, and it does not change with strategy, timing or stake size.
• Results are independent. A slot is not "due". A run of losses does not make a win more likely on the next spin, and a run of wins does not mean you are on a streak. Believing otherwise is the single most expensive misconception in gambling.
• RTP is a long-run average. A 96% RTP describes millions of spins, not your session. It tells you nothing useful about what will happen tonight.
• It is not an income. Gambling is entertainment you pay for, like a cinema ticket. Any approach that treats it as a way to make money starts from a false premise.

Under-18s

Gambling is strictly for over-18s in Ireland, and every operator we list is required to verify age.
